CHAPTER 6

I understood sleep was good for things like long term memory and general sanity, that exhaustion would probably creep up on me if I were doing longer, more physically demanding runs much like the fake hunger I felt at the start of the days.

Actually doing it though? If nothing else, it seemed tedious.

I hadn’t even done my first level up and there I was, forcing myself to count sheep in the darkened locker room my bunk was set up in.

“Which one is it?” a hushed voice asked from the corner of the room.

“Check the tags.” someone else whispered, “Looking for a ‘CrashBandigoon’.”

My first instinct was to try to hide, I’ve seen The Matrix after all, but having also played Path of Neo, I knew that the whole ducking and weaving thing was tougher than Keanu Reeves made it look.

“Hello.” I said, sitting up in my bunk and drawing the shocked attention of the three Crow patrolmen, “Can I help you with something?”

Before anyone got a chance to answer, one of the men had started toward me, a head-sized burlap sack in his hand.

“Wai-” I uttered before the bag got violently slammed over my head, “But I’m cooperating!”

“Shut up!” the bagger snapped, picking me up by my arm and pinning it against my back, “People are trying to sleep.”

I wanted to kick and yell and tell them I knew my rights, but I’d only kind of skimmed the introductory pamphlets so I sort of didn’t.

And so, struggling with the recycled air I was working with, I went quietly.

Well, as quietly as I could while getting walked into every knee-high object and doorframe.

‘Maybe it’s hazing?’ I thought to myself, ‘Bit of a prank to celebrate a successful first run?’

I wasn’t that naïve, but still, it would’ve been nice.

“So this is the other one?” a familiar-ish voice asked as I was sat down in a metal folding chair.

“Found him sleeping,” the bagger replied, “must’ve thought he got away scot-free.”

I was baffled to say the least, looking around desperately with the bag still on and making no attempt to take it off for fear that would be seen as an aggressive act.

“Alright, let’s get the bag off him.” the voice said, “You can go deal with the other one as well, make sure it’s not too messy.”

“You got it, boss.” the bagger said as he pulled my bag off, the neon light on the ceiling blinding me for a moment as my eyes adjusted, “Want me to have someone meet him on the beach?”

“That’ll be alright,” one of the two men sitting in the office chairs across the room from me replied, “we just don’t want him here, no sense wasting resources spawn-trapping him.”

“Fair enough.” the bagger agreed before leaving us and shutting the door behind him.

We were in the relatively snug organist room, the two men sharing the space with me sitting against the windows that overlooked the twilight bathed field.

One of them I recognized as the Crows’ leader, the lightly aged, redheaded Matt.
